Oscar, Avatar Is Thy Name
Will Avatar get the big ones (film and director)? Or rather will ex-Mrs. Avatar get them? This was at the centre of the Oscars this year. And not just the Oscars. The Golden Globes, the Baftas too. It was all about the juicy story behind the competition between James Cameron and his ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow. Will he beat her? Will she beat him? Will they share the big ones? If yes, which goes to which? And then there was the fact that no woman has ever got an Oscar for directing until now. But no black director as well. It was about time for one of them, don’t you think? I mean the Oscars are as much politics as film. They have a black guy as President, one with a Muslim name, to boot. It was only natural that the woman gets it. So the Oscar goes to Bigelow. What a show. What a punch in his ex-husband’s face. Almost a K.O. And let’s give Sandra Bullock one too. I mean, what do the likes of Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren want, don’t they have enough? Go Miss Congeniality! And as for the only!!!! Oscar for Tarantino, they simply could not ignore Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds. They gave him the statue, but they did not put him in the leading role category. Why not, I ask? He had most of the screen time from all the male characters in the film. The film was built more around his character than any other else. And why is it that just because he was in the same movie as Brad Pitt he is automatically ‘supporting’? He should have been nominated in a leading role and he would have won that too. But hey, politics, politics. Today we celebrated the ex-wife’s victory over the ex-husband. The women’s victory over the men. Those poor Iraqi War soldiers have won over the WWII soldiers. No matter idea or genius. It is enough to be the ex-wife of the other guy and all will be forgotten except the war between the two of them. Who cares about anything else; who cares about the films? We’ve had a great showdown between the two of them. As for the rest? They knew it from the start, they just remain Inglorious, the Basterds.
